There was a knock on my bedroom door. “Dee, your friends are here. Can they come in?” Mom called in from the hall.
Shit! They were already there, and I’d just woken up. The pain drugs had done a number on me.
In my hazy mind, part of me thought I was still in my hospital gown. I checked to see if I was exposed anywhere, expecting to feel the thin cotton cloth of a gown, and instead felt the tightness of a bra and realized I was mostly dressed—back in my own bed in a t-shirt and underpants.
“Just a sec!” I said.
I pulled the covers up to my waist and adjusted the pillows. My ribs were yelling at me to keep me from twisting my upper body, so I used my legs to power push my butt back toward the headboard.
“Come in!” I called.
Weslyn was the first through the door, her face scrunched up with concern. Behind her was Sandy, beaming relaxation and warmth into the room air. I couldn’t have been happier if President Obama himself was visiting me.
Mom brought in a couple of chairs from the dining room so they could sit and talk.
Sandy kissed me on the forehead, put her hand on my cheek, and smiled. “I’m glad you’re okay. I brought you a present.” She handed me a narrow box about a foot long. “It’s Tibetan incense—I thought you might like some.”
“Wow. Is it really from Tibet?”
“It is,” Sandy said.
“How long will it take for you to be back to normal?” Weslyn asked.
“They told me a month to six weeks for my body to be all better. They said it’ll probably take longer for me to work things through, you know, mentally.”
Weslyn and Sandy nodded in unison. They were usually so different, but today, I could see the family resemblance.
“Well, we get to test out the idea that people’s prayers can heal, because I’m pretty sure you are the number one prayed-for person in the whole country this week,” Sandy said.
“Yeah,” Weslyn chimed in, “and you only had to beat out three drug-addled celebrities for that title.”
Weslyn tended to be the serious, nervous type, so I was surprised she was joking around at all.
“I’m a little drug-addled myself this week, but I’m glad you appreciate how I timed things just right.” It was true; the meds had been numbing me out. Only that homophobic reporter had brought me to life since the fall. “How are you, Sandy?” I asked. “I’m sorry I missed our group practice.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that. We all got together and did a healing practice for you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, we did a Medicine Buddha practice and a long-life mantra for you—and all sentient beings, of course.”
“Thanks. Nobody’s ever done anything like that for me before. Mom threw me a birthday party when I was seven, but I had ruined it all when I lost it because Juanita Harris was better at pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey than I was.”
“Do you want to talk about what happened?” Sandy asked.
“You know what happened, right?” I flashed my new phone to them.
